Cahlin Family
Foundation
The Cahalin Foundation was built around a simple belief: Meaningful impact comes from building, not just funding.
For more than two decades, John Cahalin has focused on creating organizations, systems and long-term initiatives designed to produce measurable community impact.
The Builder's Mindset
The journey began while serving on the board of Junior Achievement.
John proposed a different approach to education. Instead of relying solely on textbooks and lectures, why not use entrepreneurship to engage students in learning chemistry, math, language arts, science, and communication by having them build and operate real companies?
The idea was declined.
So he built it anyway.
Entrepreneurs rarely take "no" as the final answer.
John hired a small team, funded the work himself, and launched the first pilot inside a high school chemistry classroom at High Tech High in San Diego through what became the Wicked Soap Company.
Students weren't simply learning chemistry from a textbook. They learned chemistry by formulating and manufacturing soap, while also applying math through pricing, language arts through marketing, communication through sales, and teamwork by operating a real business. The classroom became a company, and every lesson had a real-world purpose.
The model quickly gained national attention. Google for Education featured Wicked Soap Company in a video series highlighting innovative teaching, introducing the concept to educators across the country and helping accelerate its growth.
From there, the model evolved into Real World Scholars, helping students across the United States transform classrooms into student-run businesses where core academic subjects come to life through authentic experience.
The same builder's mindset led to the creation of Happy Goat Yosemite.
Rather than writing a check to help feed families in need, John set out to build something sustainable—a nonprofit farm designed to generate its own impact. By combining regenerative agriculture with tourism, educational experiences, and community events, Happy Goat creates a self-sustaining model that helps combat food insecurity in one of California's highest-poverty counties while restoring the land and strengthening the local economy.
That philosophy continues to guide the Cahalin Family Foundation today.
We believe the greatest impact comes from building—not just funding.
We're excited to support exceptional organizations, but we're equally interested in discovering the next opportunity to roll up our sleeves, build something meaningful, and create lasting impact.
Not passive philanthropy.
Building alongside the mission.
